Chosen for Use

We select materials based on how they perform over time.

Durability, repairability, aging characteristics, structure, hand feel, and long-term usefulness all matter to us more than novelty or trend. Some materials improve dramatically through years of wear, developing softness, patina, and character through repeated use. Others are chosen for stability, structure, weather resistance, or ease of maintenance.

No single material is right for every product. We choose each with intention.

Cotton Canvas & Duck Cloth

Canvas and cotton duck remain foundational to many ARTIFACT products because they are durable, repairable, and age exceptionally well.

We primarily use heavyweight cotton fabrics that provide structure without relying on synthetic backers or foam reinforcement. Over time, these materials soften and develop a worn-in familiarity unique to natural fibers.

Depending on the application, we use a range of finishes and weights including dry-finish canvas, brushed twill, and waxed cotton.

Waxed Canvas

Waxed canvas offers weather resistance, structure, and a distinctive aging process that reflects years of use.

Unlike synthetic waterproof materials, waxed cotton develops creases, marks, and patina that evolve naturally over time. We appreciate the material not because it remains pristine, but because it records use honestly.

Some waxed products can be periodically re-waxed and repaired to extend their lifespan even further.

Leather

We use leather selectively where it improves durability, structure, reinforcement, or user experience.

Natural leather changes significantly through use, developing patina and character that synthetic materials cannot replicate. Because leather is a natural material, variations in grain, tone, and surface texture are normal and expected.

Hardware & Components

Small details matter.

We source quality hardware, webbing, thread, and zippers intended for long-term reliability and repairability. Wherever possible, we favor proven components over disposable or trend-driven alternatives.

Many ARTIFACT products are designed so that worn components — such as straps, snaps, or zippers — can be repaired or replaced rather than discarded.

Up-Cycled & Vintage Materials

Some ARTIFACT products incorporate reclaimed or vintage textiles including awning material, military fabrics, antique textiles, and deadstock materials.

These limited materials often carry unique textures, colors, wear patterns, and history that cannot be replicated with newly manufactured fabric. Because of their limited nature, many of these releases are produced in very small batches and may never be repeated.

Built to Age Well

We believe materials should improve through use, not merely survive it.

Scratches, fading, softened edges, creases, repairs, and patina are all part of an object developing character over time. Rather than resisting wear entirely, we often prefer materials that reflect a life of use honestly and gracefully.

That philosophy continues to guide the materials we choose and the products we make.
